Victoria Falls to Hwange National Park, Africa By Train
I began my trip in Victoria Falls, what a nice welcome the new airport was! Compared to my last visit the airport is much quicker to get through – no waiting for hours for my visa stamp. Before I knew it I was enjoying a welcome drink overlooking the most stunning gorge at Imvelo’s Little Gorges Lodge. The location is close enough to town to enjoy the experiences on offer – I took a helicopter flight right over Victoria falls and the great Zambezi river, then later on got amongst it and got to walk the falls! Absolutely spectacular!
The next part of my journey was a great surprise as I was among the first guests to experience the new Stimelo Star (owned my Imvelo). This is a 3-carriage train service that connects onto the Victoria Falls to Bulawayo nightly train. It’s a fantastic way to transfer to the Hwange National Park properties. It’s not 5-star luxury but it’s a lot of fun and quite interesting – particularly the stops along the way.
Next up was Nehimba Lodge – a destination in itself. Our tents were luxurious, picture claw footed baths, big old-fashioned beds with dreamy netting, and an outdoor shower underneath the African night sky. Our sunset safari drives through the park were exhilarating, and the champagne a beautiful touch whilst watching another African sunset. My highlight would be seeing the elephants gather round the watering hole in the late afternoon heat. To see these wild animals so close, was jaw dropping. Our next wildlife encounter was not far away, 10 minutes later we spotted a pride of lions! To see a male lion in front of you or lion cubs playing around your car is a sight I’ll never forget.
