Mendoza , Agrentina – ‘Entre Cielos Awaits’ – By Emma

Got a few days spare before you fly home from Santiago Chile?  Can I suggest a quick stop off in Mendoza, the gateway city to the heart of the Argentinean wine industry.

We had 2 nights left on our itinerary and decided to stay at Entre Cielos which sits on 20 acres in the Mendoza countryside overlooking Malbec vines and the snowcapped Andes of Central West Argentina.  Part of the Small Luxury Hotels of The World family it is a property with 16 rooms with private terraces overlooking the beautiful swimming pool and the countryside.  Down the back of the property is where things get a little different and we stayed in a Vineyard Loft. Six strategically placed lofts are housed within the vines and are very private yet offer sweeping views of the grapes and the majestic Andes Mountains. It’s definitely been one of the more unique places I have woken up in!

Days are spent exploring the area and the very helpful team at Entre Cielos will help make bookings for you at local vineyards for tasting and suggest an itinerary to fill your days. There are tours but we decided to hire bikes and explore on our own, with a highlight for us being a picnic lunch served under the biggest olive trees I have seen in the gardens of Alta Vista vineyard, such a relaxed and memorable afternoon in the sunshine sipping away on beautiful Malbec’s.

Our evening was spent at one of Argentina’s top-rated restaurants by the name of 1844. Housed in a monastery built in the year of the restaurant’s name it is the work of celebrity Argentinean chef Francis Mallmann.  We finally managed to choose a Malbec from the 200-page wine list and one of the best steaks I have ever had. It was a beautifully gourmet way to end our adventures in South America.
