Port, Picnics and Pinhao: Portugal Is Waiting

Written on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 by Portugal

Historic hillside towns, gourmet tapas tours, private yacht sailing and candlelight concerts. Portugal has a lot to offer and we wanted to share some of our favourite experiences with you.

“Situated on the banks of the Douro River is the charming northern city of Porto. I loved discovering the city’s laneways and old buildings winding down the hillside towards the river bank. I saw beautiful hand painted tiles covering the facades of many of the buildings.

My next stop was the grand city of Lisbon. Picture a Moorish castle overlooking the town’s cobblestone streets and lively squares as trams rattle carrying the locals and tourists around the steep neighborhoods of this exciting city. I really enjoyed doing a few gourmet food and wine walking tours, taking me to places I never would of discovered on my own.

I found that Portugal’s focus is really its unique history and architecture. Scroll to the gallery below to see some of my travel photos.

” Portugal has a grand European feel, with a rich history, big squares and beautiful Limestone mosaic streets. On my last visit to Portugal I did a private Douro Valley boat trip with lunch. We were collected directly from our hotel and were taken on a scenic ride through the picture perfect Duoro Valley with its sweeping views.
We arrived in the little historic town of Regua and boarded our private yacht. We sailed to Pinhoa where we tasted Port. Back on board the yacht, we were served a lovely picnic to enjoy as we floated past the terraced vineyards one of the steepest wine regions in the world – a UNESCO World Heritage site.

I’d definitely recommend spending a few days in the Douro Valley. It was so tranquil and really felt like you were discovering a hidden away area. A day trip just isn’t enough to capture the feel of the region”

Emma recently experienced the Iberian peninsula with Viking River Cruises. Read on for an idea of what you can expect from your river cruise and a little feedback from Emma herself.

” What a relaxing way to experience some of Spain and Portugal’s beautiful towns. From Porto to Salamanca and the beautiful scenery in between, traveling on a Viking river cruise was the perfect experience.

The staff, the food the wine and the new friends made on board completed the journey. The excursions were diverse and interesting, something for everyone. It was a great family experience and one I know a lot of river cruisers would enjoy, a great way to experience the Douro. “
